I just got my new issue of the Dahlal catalog (I love her stuff!!) and on the second to last page, I noticed that she's got a pant that looks amazingly like the sash Melodias......right on down to the laces hanging down and the lettuce edging at the slit. Dahlal calls them her 'Memphite Pant'......
Does Melo know about this? I dont really know what to think now.....I totally am into supporting dancer-owned business, and normally I love Dahlal's stuff, but Im concerned that she's ripping Melodia off??
Can anyone else verify this?? Does anyone else know whats going on?
~Su, totally confused

Re: Fauxlodias in Dahlal's catalog?
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 7:41 PMI have a friend who bought a small pair, those things were huge in the legs.
The waist fit fine but I had to take three inches off of the length and four from the inseam to get them to fit her.
If she had needed to take them to a seamstress for that, in the end they would probably cost more than Melodia's :)

Mon, May 12, 2008 - 7:53 PMwww.silvex.org/cholies.htm
so out of curiosity I went to the site and didn't see anything on the top page for pants. I was browsing under cholis page, and voila!!!! at the very bottom of this page is a picture of Black Sash....now once you click on the picture, everyone!!!!!, the enlarged picture says Melodia.JPG, and you can see very clearly that it IS large in the thigh area. $6?
it is misleading once you click the photo, it made me think for a second: is Silvex a new retailer other than 5/diamond?....but from what others report here, it seems imitation....if so, then they shouldn't say Melodia.JPG!!! WTF! -

Re: Fauxlodias in Dahlal's catalog?
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 11:33 PMyes, they are imitations.
and no, it isn't right that the picture is titled "Melodia" ...probably in attempt to trick people into buying inferior goods. :( -

Re: Fauxlodias in Dahlal's catalog?
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 12:27 AMThe picture is titled Melodia pants because they were first advertised as Melodia Pants.
I know Bonnie talked to him and he stopped advertising them as such...but he should probably be talked to as what the picture is titled

Re: Fauxlodias in Dahlal's catalog?
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 8:58 AMi try not to get worked up over these things, but i respect melodia as a business woman and artist so when i feel like her creativity is being jacked I HAVE to say something!
i saw this in a hoop dancers costume thread and was distressed by the obvious lifting of her design.
Yes I know bell bottoms have been around forever, and yes i know you she's not the first person ever to think of the concept, but still i think it's LAME.
MY 2 cents.
thanks

Re: Fauxlodias in Dahlal's catalog?
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 12:56 PMoh i just saw those recently too~
it does make me angry when people blatantly rip off Melodia's designs, and there have been threads in the past discussing it, and it's just going to happen. :( and yes, the flared pant style has been around for ages, but Melo was the one who introduced them into the bellydance community, with her own pattern and style variations.
the best thing we can do is to get people to stay loyal to Melo and discourage buying of knockoffs.
though i know Melodia has said that she doesnt mind people using a special fabric they love and making their own pair of Melo-inspired pants....but they of course should not be making 20 pairs and selling them as faux-lodias.
from all the stuff i have ever read about imitation "dance flares" vs. Melodias, people more often than not favor Melos over anything else, saying that quality and fit is the the best considering the value, and generally get a bigger sense of satisfaction knowing they are supporting another dancer. :) -

Re: Fauxlodias in Dahlal's catalog?
Thu, May 15, 2008 - 7:18 AMWow. That is actually against the law I believe, to use someone else's picture and even brand name to promote your stuff. $6?! Seriously? The fabric costs more than that. What is shipping $80? -

Re: Fauxlodias in Dahlal's catalog?
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 4:18 PMYeah, I saw this too. I guess the optimistic thing to say is "imitation is the highest form of flattery," but I'm stickin to my true melos. -

Re: Fauxlodias in Dahlal's catalog?
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 10:54 PMTrue Melos are awesome , Its just the feeling haha , of course you can buy those faux-lodias but think about it you will end up trying to fix them to fit you , but nothing can compare with the satisfaction of getting your loved melodias by mail and wear them for the first time ,they are great ...
I have made my own faux-lodias , since I am a seamstress and I like them but still I own 5 or more melos because they rule =)!! -

Re: Fauxlodias in Dahlal's catalog?
Thu, May 15, 2008 - 8:09 AMI actually thought the ones in Dahlal's catalog looked a lot like Sharifwear's "tribal string pants" - sharifwear.com/ -

Re: Mass produced Fauxlodias in any dance catalog.
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 10:09 AMThere IS nothing like the real thing. The fit, the shape, the drape, the "Goddess I'm Sexy In these Bad Girls Pants" feeling, is just not there in the imitations. I love my Melo's. I do confess to have a pair of self-made Faux's in black plum velvet & even made myself a Ghawazee coat to match (kinda my take on a bellydaner suit), but for my personal use. The only thing as cool as getting a pair of Melo's is the satisfaction of making something beautiful with your own hands that looks like something you love! I love the Melo shapes so much that I want to wear them all the time, so I hope Ms. melodia will forgive me for making clothes for myself that look like hers. Her design shapes inspire my creative juices.

Re: Fauxlodias in Dahlal's catalog?
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 1:14 PMI think a good rule of thumb is that if you want a special pair of melodia-esque pants for yourself and you design and make them and wear them, go for it. I get think it's a little weird to make exact replicas and sell them... it's like when you see a dancer completely copy another dancer's style. Sure, its pretty sometimes, but everyone knows you're not the original so it's not quite as good.
